Other work
More stuff I do:
Editing
I have edited several focused report supplements - carried by major UK newspapers - for Media Planet International. Here are two:
I'm also the deputy editor of SkinsMatter.com - a web resource for people with sensitive, allergic and problem skin conditions.
Research and consultancy
I’m
available for research projects in the fields of food, nutrition, allergy and
health. Previous projects undertaken include nutritional consultancy
for the book, You Are What You Eat: Michelle’s Diary, by Michelle McManus (Michael O’Mara). Day rates available on request.
Blogging
In early 2010, I started a blog called Food Allergy, Food Intolerance... and the Media, which covers my own journalism and authoring of the subjects, examines the confusion surrounding food hypersensitivities and critiques how the health media report the subject.
Sub-editing and proofreading
I’m occasionally available for sub-editing and proofreading work. Clients have included Independent Magazines UK, Women’s Health, Pregnancy, Junior, Junior Pregnancy & Baby, Health & Fitness, Slimming Magazine and BBCi.
Tutoring, writing advice and criticism
As an experienced writing tutor, I write a blog called Mistakes Writers Make, aimed at new and student writers of non-fiction, featuring news, markets, advice and articles. With this background, I am qualified to critically assess non-fiction articles, book proposals or chapters, including corrections and comments on manuscripts, plus a typed critique and, where relevant or requested, a suggested reading list and market advice. Please email me for rates.
Translation
I can occasionally undertake Italian to English translation (non-fiction).
Reviewing
My reviews of art, exhibitions, books (fiction and non-fiction), restaurants and games have appeared in several magazines, including Midweek, Junior and Rated. Throughout 2001, I edited the arts pages of London-based title, LAM. Between 2003 and 2005, I reviewed books for Red Handed, the quarterly magazine for men in Wales. I currently write reviews of health and medical titles for the newsletter of the Guild of Health Writers and for Foods Matter.
Food judging
I sit on the panel of judges for the annual Free From Food Awards which celebrates and rewards the best products for people with food sensitivities, such as gluten-free and dairy-free foods.
